Abide With Me
Henry Francis Lyte wrote the hymn of “Abide With Me” in the last few days of his life in the year 1847. He had struggled with tuberculosis for many years. Lyte delivered his last sermon on the day he wrote this hymn and died after three weeks when he visited Nice, France for recuperation. His last sermon brought out his inner feelings about the journey that every man needs to undergo from birth to death. An excerpt from the sermon is quoted here:
“O brethren, I stand here among you to day, as alive from the dead, if I may hope to impress it upon you, and induce you to prepare for that solemn hour which must come to all, by a timely acquaintance with the death of Christ.”
Similarly, Abide with Me is a hymn to God, which describes the trials and tribulations of a man living on Earth. It acknowledges the presence of God beside every human being, and that we have to return to the wings of God once we die.
“Abide With Me” was first sang at Henry Francis Lyte's funeral.
